Space Weather Days for Spain Strengthen Spain’s National Space Weather Strategy

Last June, the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Madrid hosted the Space Weather Days for Spain, a two-day workshop jointly organized by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Spanish Space Agency (AEE).

The event brought together representatives from government institutions, research organizations, universities, industry, and operators of critical infrastructure to assess Spain’s current Space Weather capabilities and define priorities for future national development.

The discussions focused on identifying user needs across strategic sectors, evaluating existing national expertise and infrastructure, analysing technological and operational gaps, and establishing a roadmap to strengthen Spain’s preparedness for Space Weather events within the broader European framework.

As part of the workshop, Sergio Cayuela participated in the Extreme Event Planning and Preparedness working group, contributing to discussions on resilience, preparedness, and future capabilities for responding to severe Space Weather events affecting critical infrastructure, satellite services, navigation systems, and communications.

The outcomes of the workshop will support the continued development of Spain’s national Space Weather strategy, fostering stronger collaboration between public institutions, academia, and industry while reinforcing the country’s contribution to European Space Weather initiatives.
